Giriş:

Problem çözmede, soruna hemen girişmek yerine, dikkatli ve sistematik yaklaşım ilke olmalıdır. Problem iyice anlaşılmalı ve mümkün olduğu kadar küçük parçalara ayırılmalıdır.

René Descartes (1596-1650) tarafından “Discours de la méthode Pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences-Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason, and Seeking Truth in the Sciences (Bilimde Gerçeği Arama ve Sebebe Doğru Bir Şekilde Ulaşma Metodu Üzerine)-1637 isimli kitabında anlatılan problem çözme teknikleri;

  1. Doğruluğu kesin olarak kanıtlanmadıkça, hiçbir şeyi doğru olarak kabul etmeyin; tahmin ve ön yargılardan kaçının. (Zan ile hüküm olunmaz.)
  2. Karşılaştığınız her güçlüğü mümkün olduğu kadar çok parçaya bölün. (Böl, parçala ve analiz et.)
  3. Düzenli bir biçimde düşünün; anlaşılması en kolay olan şeylerle başlayıp yavaş yavaş daha zor ve karmaşık olanlara doğru ilerleyiniz. (Kolaydan zora doğru)
  4. Olaya bakışınız çok genel, hazırladığınız ayrıntılı liste ise hiçbir şeyi dışarıda bırakmayacak kadar kusursuz ve eksiksiz olsun.
